Daryl Zero is a private investigator and—along with his assistant, Steve Arlo—he solves impossible crimes and puzzles. Although Daryl's a master investigator, he doesn't know what to do with himself when he's not working; he has no social skills, writes bad music and drives Steve crazy.

Category Breakdown
LGBTQ+ Representation
The film lacks prominent LGBTQ+ characters or narratives. Romantic tension follows a conventional structure without engaging in queer identity or subversion.
Gender Representation
The film subverts traditional gender hierarchies by presenting a socially inept male lead. This allows the more socially competent Felicity to fill the vacuum of traditional masculine authority.
Racial & Ethnic Diversity
The cast reflects a homogeneous urban environment typical of late-90s cinema. There is a lack of significant racial diversity within the primary character arcs.
Religious & Cultural Diversity
The narrative focuses on individualistic pursuit and specialized cognitive processes. It avoids glorifying institutional authority, focusing instead on the isolated individual.
Disability Representation
Daryl Zero provides a sophisticated portrayal of neurodivergent-coded behavior. His social detachment and unconventional processing are central to his professional success rather than being treated as a hurdle.

AI Analysis
Zero Effect succeeds as a character study that deconstructs the hyper-masculine detective trope. By centering a protagonist whose strength lies in cognitive specialization rather than physical dominance, the film offers a refreshing take on the genre. The portrayal of neurodivergent-coded traits is particularly effective. The narrative integrates Daryl's social eccentricities into his professional competence, avoiding the pitfalls of using disability as a mere moral lesson or plot device. However, these strengths are limited by a lack of intersectionality. The film remains largely homogeneous in its racial and LGBTQ+ representation, reflecting the mainstream cinematic standards of its era.
