Synopsis

Set in a Tex-Mex border town, Not Forgotten is a classic psychological thriller about Jack and Amaya Bishop, a couple who must come to terms with their tortured pasts in order to save their kidnapped daughter. It is a tale taut with intrigue and steeped in Latino mysticism, where the line between what's real and what's imagined becomes hopelessly blurred.

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

3.0/10

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film contains no visible LGBTQ+ characters or narratives. Interpersonal dynamics focus exclusively on traditional familial and romantic structures.

Gender Representation

Fair

A female protagonist drives the psychological tension and plot agency. However, the narrative reinforces tropes of female fragility by framing her experience through doubt and skepticism from male characters.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Limited

The Tex-Mex border setting and Latino mysticism serve primarily as atmospheric backdrops. The cast remains largely homogeneous, lacking characters of color with significant systemic agency.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

The story focuses on individual survival rather than critiquing Western institutions or organized religion. Cultural elements remain atmospheric rather than driving a diverse narrative.

Disability Representation

Fair

The film explores neurodivergence and mental health through the protagonist's trauma. While nuanced, it risks using mental instability as a standard plot device for an unreliable narrator.

Strengths

  • The female protagonist is granted significant agency in driving the film's central psychological tension.
  • The exploration of trauma provides a nuanced look at the subjective experience of psychological vulnerability.

Areas for Improvement

  • The film relies on traditional tropes that frame female characters through lenses of instability and doubt.
  • The Tex-Mex setting is used more for atmosphere than for centering characters of color with agency.
  • The narrative lacks any representation of LGBTQ+ identities or non-heteronormative dynamics.

AI Analysis

Not Forgotten is a genre-standard psychological thriller that prioritizes atmospheric tension and individual psychological arcs over intersectional representation. The film operates within established cinematic structures rather than attempting to subvert social or cultural norms. The narrative relies heavily on traditional tropes, such as the unreliable narrator and gendered perceptions of psychological instability. While it offers a harrowing look at trauma, it lacks a broader engagement with diverse identities or systemic critiques. Ultimately, the film functions as a character study of personal unraveling. It uses its unique Tex-Mex setting for mood rather than as a vehicle for meaningful racial or cultural representation.
