Set in 1970s Rome, the fiction tracks the plight of a nuclear family, consisting of an unhappy married couple: Clara (a deeply dissatisfied expatriate Spaniard) and Felice (an abusive businessman cheating on Clara with his secretary) and their children Adriana, Gino, and Diana. Their eldest child, 12-year-old Adriana, experiences gender dysphoria; he rejects girlhood and instead goes by the name of Andrea (a primarily masculine name in Italian). Andrea develops a crush for Sara, a Roma girl who knows him as a boy. Upon a shared sense of being outsiders, Andrea and Clara grow closer.

Category Breakdown
LGBTQ+ Representation
The film offers a nuanced look at gender dysphoria through Andrea, a child yearning to live as the boy he knows himself to be. This disrupts 1970s heteronormative structures by centering a non-cisnormative identity.
Gender Representation
Clara serves as a powerful emotional anchor, showcasing maternal agency and psychological strength. The narrative avoids submissive tropes, focusing instead on the intellectual labor required to navigate complex domestic tensions.
Racial & Ethnic Diversity
The story is deeply rooted in a specific Mediterranean socioeconomic context. While it avoids a generic homogeneous feel through textured cultural identity, it lacks significant racial blending or diverse casting.
Religious & Cultural Diversity
The film deconstructs the idealized Western family by presenting it as a site of tension and loss. Its non-linear structure prioritizes subjective, existential experiences over traditional moral didacticism.
Disability Representation
There are no prominent depictions of physical or neurodivergent disabilities that serve as central plot drivers or character arcs.

AI Analysis
L'immensità stands out for its sophisticated handling of gender identity and its subversion of traditional domestic hierarchies. By centering Andrea's journey, the film moves beyond mere representation to explore the internal reality of a child's identity within a restrictive era. The film also excels in its portrayal of female agency, presenting motherhood as a complex psychological struggle rather than a passive role. This adds significant depth to the domestic drama. However, the film's cultural scope is narrow. While it captures a specific Mediterranean texture, it remains largely confined to a specific ethnic and geographical setting without broader racial diversity.
