New Showbiz Analysis

Beneath the Surface is a raw examination of socioeconomic struggles rather than a focused study of diverse identities. It excels in dismantling traditional social hierarchies and highlighting a female protagonist's battle for autonomy amid systemic failures. However, the film falls short due to its lack of racial and LGBTQ+ diversity, staying confined to a homogeneous Swedish context. Its focus on addiction and predatory dynamics often emphasizes victimization over empowering character development. Ultimately, the film serves as a critique of societal structures and the erosion of the family unit, prioritizing realism over broad representation.
