LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

Gender Representation

Limited

The narrative centers almost exclusively on a male protagonist. The absence of female characters prevents any subversion of traditional gender hierarchies.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Fair

Santiago is depicted as a Cuban fisherman, providing a baseline of ethnic representation. However, a lack of diverse supporting characters limits the depth of this portrayal.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

Disability Representation

Minimal

There are no depictions of physical, neurodivergent, or sensory disabilities. The protagonist's aging is presented as a natural life progression.

Strengths

  • The Cuban setting provides a foundation for ethnic representation through the protagonist's identity.

Areas for Improvement

  • The film lacks female characters and diverse supporting roles.
  • There is no representation of LGBTQ+ identities or disabilities.
  • The narrative fails to engage with complex cultural or post-colonial themes.

AI Analysis

This animated adaptation of Hemingway's classic is a narrow character study focused on the singular archetype of masculine endurance. It prioritizes the individual struggle against nature over any broader social or intersectional exploration. While the Cuban setting provides a specific cultural anchor for the protagonist, the film lacks the character variety needed to explore complex social dynamics. The narrative remains firmly rooted in traditionalist values of personal merit and physical struggle. Ultimately, the film functions as a classicalist tale that avoids challenging existing social hierarchies, resulting in a very limited scope of representation.
