In Darkness is a sophisticated historical drama that centers on the existential struggle of ethnic survival. It excels by focusing on the Jewish experience and deconstructing the concept of legitimate authority during the Nazi occupation. The film's strength lies in its nuanced portrayal of moral ambiguity and its refusal to rely on traditional heroic clichés. By framing 'anti-social' behaviors as essential acts of ability to act, it offers a powerful critique of systemic oppression. However, the film operates within narrow historical constraints, lacking representation of LGBTQ+ identities and maintaining traditional gender hierarchies focused on male-driven survival strategies.
