Bagdad Cafe succeeds as a subversive desert narrative that replaces rugged individualism with radical empathy. It centers on the empowerment of underrepresented characters, using a desolate setting to explore communal revitalization and the strength of human connection. The film's greatest strength lies in its rejection of traditional hierarchies. By prioritizing female connection and a 'found family' structure, it challenges the standard patriarchal and capitalist clichés often found in Western settings. However, the film remains somewhat limited in its explicit representation. It avoids clear queer identities and lacks prominent depictions of physical disabilities, relying instead on more ambiguous or psychological forms of otherness.
