Notes from Dad is a character-driven drama that finds its strength in meaningful racial representation. By centering a Black protagonist in a role of professional authority and emotional complexity, the film moves beyond stereotypical clichés. However, the film remains tethered to traditional social structures. The narrative architecture prioritizes conventional familial reconciliation and reinforces standard community roles rather than challenging established cultural hierarchies. While the film offers a restorative look at fatherhood, it lacks diversity in terms of LGBTQ+ representation and disability inclusion, sticking to a standard, traditional approach to the family genre.
