New Showbiz Analysis

Hellbender succeeds as a subversive character study that dismantles traditional power structures. By centering on female intellect and maternal bonds in a world without masculine leadership, it offers a refreshing departure from standard genre clichés. The film's strength lies in its cultural deconstruction. It effectively portrays a post-institutional existence where the collapse of capitalism and organized religion forces characters to navigate a new, morally relative reality. However, the film lacks multi-layered breadth. The absence of explicit LGBTQ+ representation and a lack of visible racial diversity within the small ensemble prevent a higher score for inclusivity.
