Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Limited

The film lacks explicit evidence of LGBTQ+ characters or narratives. The story focuses on traditional horror tropes like possession, which typically prioritize established social structures.

Gender Representation

Fair

Female leads appear in the top billing, suggesting some female agency. However, the football-centric setting and focus on a group of kids lean toward traditionally masculine coding.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Good

The production offers high regional specificity by centering on an Indonesian village. Utilizing local folklore and an Indonesian ensemble provides meaningful Southeast Asian representation.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

The narrative is deeply rooted in religious and communal frameworks. It reinforces traditional authority and religious observance rather than critiquing these spiritual social boundaries.

Disability Representation

Minimal

There is no mention of characters with visible or invisible disabilities in the available information.

Strengths

  • Strong regional and ethnic specificity through Indonesian folklore.
  • Meaningful Southeast Asian representation via a local ensemble cast.
  • Effective use of localized mythologies like Jin Ummu Sibyan.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lack of representation for LGBTQ+ identities or non-heteronormative narratives.
  • Narrative reliance on traditionalist religious and communal structures.
  • Potential gendered coding in settings like the football-centric plot.

AI Analysis

The Wailing of the Maghrib 2 excels as a piece of localized folk horror. By centering the plot on Indonesian mythology and the village of Giritirto, it successfully disrupts Western-centric horror norms through authentic ethnic and regional specificity. However, the film operates within a conservative narrative framework. The conflict stems from violating religious and communal norms, suggesting a story that reinforces traditionalist structures rather than subverting them. This reliance on established social and spiritual hierarchies limits its progressive reach. While the casting provides a strong sense of place, the film lacks diversity in terms of identity subversion. It functions as a culturally specific experience that prioritizes traditionalist paradigms over modern social deconstruction.
