Synopsis

Florence, a young irresponsible mother and her precocious daughter, Eugenia, have an unusual relationship. The roles between the two are reversed. Florence is totally inept at caring for a daughter, whereas Eugenia, only 10 years old, shows maturity and responsibility far beyond what her age might lead you to suppose.

AI Analysis

Kept and Dreamless succeeds as a psychological study that disrupts domestic hierarchies. By reversing the roles of mother and daughter, the film challenges the expectation of the mother as a stabilizing moral center. This subversion provides a sophisticated critique of traditional family structures. However, the film's scope appears narrow. The focus on a single, dyadic relationship leaves little room for broader social representation, such as LGBTQ+ identities or diverse racial backgrounds. The narrative is deeply centered on a specific domestic deconstruction. Ultimately, the film's strength lies in its thematic depth regarding gender and authority rather than its breadth of representation. It trades wide-ranging diversity for a concentrated, unconventional look at maternal and childhood roles.
