Wang Chao’s drama is a somber exploration of moral ambiguity set against the backdrop of unregulated coal mining. It excels in its authentic portrayal of the Chinese working class and its critique of industrialization and systemic issues. However, the film’s narrow demographic focus limits its scope. The narrative is heavily centered on male-dominated labor roles and lacks significant representation of LGBTQ+ identities or women's ability to drive the story. Ultimately, the film’s strength lies in its social realism and its avoidance of Western-centric perspectives, despite its narrow gender and identity portrayals.
