New Showbiz Analysis

Goldbuster focuses on a community of outsiders, emphasizing the collective ability to act of underrepresented groups. By highlighting the residents of Humble Grove, the film avoids typical heroic narratives and instead explores the power of community resistance against corporate exploitation. The film stands out for its strong cultural specificity, using Hong Kong-centric settings and folk-based spiritual solutions. This approach steers clear of Anglo-centric storytelling norms, prioritizing local traditions and community-based resistance against corporate encroachment. However, the representation remains somewhat vague regarding specific identities. While the flamboyant lead challenges gender norms, the lack of confirmed LGBTQ+ narratives or detailed descriptions of physical disabilities limits the depth of representation.

Official Synopsis

A quirky internet star, a pair of retired gangsters, and the black sheep of a prolific family of herbalists are a few of the oddball tenants that call the dilapidated apartments of Humble Grove home. Fearful of being locked out by a ruthless property developer with his eye on the building, they’ve stayed inside for years. So, when supernatural incidents befall them all on one night, instead of running, they turn to flamboyant ghost hunter Golden Ling to perform a most unusual exorcism.
