49 Days is a genre-bending thriller that finds its strength in cultural specificity rather than multi-layered identity politics. By focusing on the '49 days' superstition, the film subverts Western-centric legal clichés and offers a distinct Eastern worldview regarding justice and the soul. While the film provides a non-Western perspective, it remains limited in its representation of other underrepresented groups. There is a lack of LGBTQ+ visibility and no meaningful inclusion of characters with disabilities. The female lead provides ability to act, yet the characterization often adheres to traditional genre archetypes. Ultimately, the film's diversity is rooted in its metaphysical framework. It critiques systemic structures by suggesting that institutional truth is often incomplete when compared to spiritual or subjective realities.
