The film serves as a study of traditional patriarchal and ethnic hierarchies, focusing on the internal dynamics of the DiMeo crime family. However, it incorporates the 1967 Newark riots to address racial tensions and systemic urban issues. The narrative explores cultural themes of tribal loyalty and moral relativism, but through the lens of criminal enterprise.
