Synopsis

Online fashion model Hyo-jeong faces imminent threat of being unemployed because of the younger and more fashionable generation coming after her. While relying on surgical procedures and treatments, Hyo-jeong hears about a mysterious yoga class that helps make perfect body shape from her old high school classmate, Ga-yeong. Hyo-jeong eventually attends the yoga class with three classmates: Mi-yeon, a boxer who failed to keep her body fit, Ji-won, who has unstable mental condition, and Ye-na, a movie star who is morbidly obsessed with her appearance. Meanwhile, police start to investigate the enigma behind this yoga class after finding out that a murder in the neighborhood was committed by a woman named Bo-ra, a former yoga class student.

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

5.5/10

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Limited

The film lacks explicit depictions of queer identities or non-heteronormative narratives. Character dynamics focus on female competition and shared trauma rather than LGBTQ+ intimacy.

Gender Representation

Good

The story centers entirely on female agency and experiences. By removing traditional male authority figures, the film shifts power dynamics to a female-dominated ensemble.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Fair

The cast is relatively homogeneous, reflecting its South Korean production context. It avoids Western-centric whitewashing by focusing on internal social pressures within a specific cultural milieu.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Good

The narrative critiques capitalist beauty standards and the commodification of the body. It frames the pursuit of physical perfection through wellness movements as a corrupting force.

Disability Representation

Fair

Mental health is introduced through the character Ji-won, who has an unstable mental condition. It remains unclear if this provides depth or serves as a plot device.

Strengths

  • Strong subversion of traditional gender hierarchies by centering female agency.
  • Effective critique of capitalist beauty standards and the commodification of the body.
  • Focuses on female-driven psychological horror and professional anxieties.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lack of explicit LGBTQ+ representation or queer narratives.
  • Homogeneous casting limits racial and ethnic diversity.
  • Unclear depth regarding the portrayal of mental health and neurodivergence.

AI Analysis

The Cursed Lesson is a genre-driven horror film that finds its strength in subverting traditional gender hierarchies. By centering the plot on female professional anxiety and physical obsession, it creates a space where women are the primary drivers of the narrative conflict. However, the film's diversity is limited by its narrow demographic focus. The lack of LGBTQ+ representation and the homogeneous cast prevent it from achieving a higher score. While it offers a sharp critique of modern beauty standards, the representation of neurodivergence remains thin. Ultimately, the film succeeds as a social critique of consumerism but lacks the breadth of identity-based storytelling found in more intersectional works.
