New Showbiz Analysis

Boys on the Side is a sophisticated period piece that disrupts historical clichés by centering queer women's ability to drive the story. It successfully deconstructs the social norms of the 1930s through a lens of identity and survival. The film excels in its portrayal of non-straight intimacy and female solidarity. By removing the male gaze, the characters are granted a significant role in driving the story to navigate their own economic and social instabilities. However, the film's progressive impact is limited by a lack of racial and ethnic plurality. While it offers a deep dive into gender and sexual identity, the central cast remains largely homogeneous.

Category Breakdown

Does Boys on the Side have LGBTQ+ representation?

Excellent

The film centers a romantic and sexual relationship between two women during the Great Depression. This relationship serves as the primary engine for the plot and emotional development, moving far beyond mere including someone from a minority group without giving them real depth.

Excellent

The narrative challenges traditional hierarchies by removing male control from the central conflict. Female protagonists drive the story, negotiating their own survival and emotional needs in a male-dominated society.

How racially and ethnically diverse is Boys on the Side?

Limited

The film focuses on a relatively homogeneous cast within its primary character trio. While it captures socioeconomic breadth, it lacks significant diversity among the central protagonists.

Good

The story critiques the moral and social rigidity of the 1930s. By framing the protagonists as outsiders, it suggests that the era's traditional values were often exclusionary or oppressive.
