New Showbiz Analysis

Under the Sun is a sophisticated coming-of-age story that prioritizes psychological depth over typical genre elements. It shines by making queer identity a central theme, allowing for a nuanced exploration of self-discovery. The film effectively breaks down social hierarchies and the performance of gender roles. By highlighting the tension between internal identity and external expectations, it provides a realistic view of adolescent growth in a small town. While the film offers a contemporary, multicultural perspective on Europe, its main focus is on personal relationships. This keeps the narrative close to home, though it touches less on broader issues of racial or disability representation.
