On Our Own is a character-driven exploration of systemic challenges. It avoids clichés about the perfect traditional family, instead highlighting the ability to act of individuals on the periphery of social stability. The film dismantles the idealized domestic unit. While the film offers a nuanced look at social structures, it remains limited in its explicit representation of diverse identities. The narrative focuses on a specific family unit navigating legal and social instability. Ultimately, the film's strength lies in its empathetic portrayal of those on the margins of social stability, even if it does not actively feature a broad range of demographic diversity.

Official Synopsis
Three siblings ingeniously avoid being sent off to a children's home while their solo-mother serves a short sentence in a prison for shoplifting. Rather than have the news leak out and have to be escorted off with the eccentric welfare officer, they invent a 'never present' dad who is looking after them.
