Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Fair

The film centers on heteronormative familial structures and the fraternal bond between Arthur and Orm. It lacks explicit non-cisnormative identities or visible queer-coded subtext within the central character arcs.

Gender Representation

Good

Mera serves as a powerful pillar of Atlantean stability, possessing significant political authority and combat proficiency. The narrative avoids submissive tropes, presenting a more egalitarian distribution of influence than classical mythologies.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Excellent

The film moves away from Anglo-centric norms by featuring a diverse cast, including Halle Bailey and Amber Jody Watt. Atlantis is depicted as a multicultural, multi-ethnic civilization reflecting a globalized reality.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Good

The story explores tensions between the surface world and Atlantis through environmental and industrial lenses. It touches on post-colonial themes regarding resource exploitation and the sovereignty of hidden civilizations.

Disability Representation

Fair

The film lacks agency-driven portrayals of disability or neurodivergence. It only touches on physical vulnerability through the use of externalized power like the Black Trident to compensate for limitations.

Strengths

  • The film features a highly diverse, multicultural cast that avoids traditional Anglo-centric fantasy norms.
  • Mera is portrayed with significant agency, combat skill, and political authority rather than as a secondary character.
  • The narrative provides a sophisticated critique of industrialism and the environmental impact of the surface world.

Areas for Improvement

  • The film lacks explicit representation of LGBTQ+ identities or queer-coded subtext in its central arcs.
  • There is a lack of meaningful, agency-driven portrayals of characters with disabilities or neurodivergence.
  • Romantic and gendered dynamics remain largely traditional and heteronormative.

AI Analysis

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom succeeds as a high-fantasy blockbuster by embracing a multicultural aesthetic. The film's greatest strength lies in its rejection of Western-centric fantasy tropes, instead presenting a diverse, globalized Atlantis through intentional casting and multi-ethnic world-building. While the film excels in racial and gender representation, it remains more traditional in its romantic and social structures. The narrative focuses heavily on heteronormative family dynamics and lacks meaningful representation for LGBTQ+ identities or characters with disabilities. Ultimately, the film uses its setting to critique industrialism and environmental disruption. It balances spectacle with subtle themes of sovereignty and ecological tension, making it a more progressive entry in the superhero genre.
