Erin's Guide to Kissing Girls is a targeted, identity-driven romantic comedy that uses a queer lens to drive its plot. By making the protagonist's struggle with visibility and romantic pursuit the central engine, the film challenges traditional genre clichés. The film excels at centering queer ability to act and female-led interpersonal dynamics. It successfully subverts the typical male-centric focus of adolescent coming-of-age stories, providing a space for female emotional intelligence to lead the narrative. While the production appears multi-ethnic through its casting, the narrative depth regarding specific racial or multi-layered experiences is less defined. The film's primary impact lies in its intentionality regarding LGBTQ+ themes and its critique of social hierarchies.
