Soldier of Fortune is a classic mid-century adventure film that upholds the social structures of its time. The narrative centers on Western masculine ability to act, placing American protagonists at the heart of a foreign conflict in Hong Kong. While the film employs East Asian actors, it presents the setting through a colonialist lens. The story prioritizes Western intervention and traditional gender roles, offering little challenge to the status quo. Ultimately, the film operates as a conventional genre piece that lacks significant diversity in identity or perspective.
