Synopsis

From directors Nick Doob and Shari Cookson, "Requiem for the Dead" is made entirely from found footage, including social media posts, 9-1-1 calls, news stories and police files. The film tells the stories of those who have been killed by gunfire, whether from accidental violence, random shootings, family disputes or suicide. Hear those stories of those who have died, which is only a fraction of the 32,000 people killed in America each year, 88 per day, from gun violence.

Where to Watch

Diversity & Representation

Category Breakdown

Does Requiem for the Dead: American Spring 2014 have LGBTQ+ representation?

Fair

The film's reliance on uncurated social media and 9-1-1 calls suggests a broad spectrum of human experience. While specific non-cisnormative narratives are not explicitly centered, the found footage format inherently captures diverse lived realities.

How does Requiem for the Dead: American Spring 2014 portray gender?

Fair

The narrative focuses on the vulnerability of victims across all demographics. This structure likely disrupts traditional masculine tropes of heroism by highlighting the domestic reality of those lost to violence.

How racially and ethnically diverse is Requiem for the Dead: American Spring 2014?

Good

By utilizing news stories and police files, the film reflects the multifaceted racial landscape of the United States. This archival approach provides a platform for voices often marginalized in traditional news cycles.

How does Requiem for the Dead: American Spring 2014 represent religion and culture?

Excellent

The film prioritizes subjective, individual truths over centralized Western narratives. By framing violence as a requiem, it critiques systemic failures and contemporary social structures rather than offering patriotic celebrations.

Does Requiem for the Dead: American Spring 2014 include disability representation?

Fair

The inclusion of raw 9-1-1 calls provides a high probability of representing diverse mental health realities and sensory experiences. This avoids the sanitization often found in scripted media regarding physical or neurodivergent vulnerabilities.

Strengths

  • The found footage format captures a broad, uncurated spectrum of human experience and diverse identities.
  • The archival approach provides a platform for marginalized voices often ignored by traditional news cycles.
  • The film avoids sanitized depictions of crisis by using raw, unedited human interactions.

Areas for Improvement

  • The film lacks explicit centering of specific LGBTQ+ or gender-focused narratives within its overview.
  • The reliance on found footage makes it difficult to determine if the film actively subverts gender hierarchies.

Score Reasoning

Requiem for the Dead: American Spring 2014 uses a deconstructive, archival approach to examine the systemic reality of gun violence. By utilizing found footage, social media, and police files, the film bypasses traditional studio perspectives to present a fragmented, intersectional view of American life. The documentary's strength lies in its ability to prioritize the voices of the deceased and the marginalized over institutional narratives. This method allows for a more nuanced depiction of the diverse identities affected by violence. However, the film's reliance on uncurated source material means that while it captures a wide spectrum of human experience, it does not explicitly center specific identity-driven narratives. The representation is a byproduct of the medium rather than a curated thematic focus.
