Werewolves (2024) follows conventional horror genre structures, focusing on survival mechanics rather than ideological messaging. Its narrative structure reinforces existing social hierarchies without challenging them. The creative team's history suggests a preference for entertainment over innovative storytelling that addresses multi-layered issues. The film scores low on diversity metrics, lacking intentional subversion of traditional narratives. While it features a racially diverse supporting cast, these characters do not drive the plot or play a significant role in driving the story. Gender dynamics are strictly traditional, with women often portrayed as vulnerable and men as strong leaders. Culturally, the film upholds Western institutions like the military and science as the primary responses to existential threats. It does not critique capitalism, religion, or patriotism, nor does it represent disability or neurodivergence. The result is a media product that minimally impacts diversity and adheres closely to established, non-progressive narrative structures.
Category Breakdown
The film does not include any LGBTQ+ characters or storylines that explore non-straight relationships. All central relationships are between heterosexual couples, which means there is no representation of LGBTQ+ identities.
Female characters such as Lucy and Reagan are portrayed as needing rescue or protection, reinforcing traditional gender roles. Male characters are shown as the main protectors and leaders during crises, emphasizing conventional masculinity.
The cast includes actors of different races like Ilfenesh Hadera and Lou Diamond Phillips, but their roles do not challenge the dominance of the white male protagonist. Their presence seems functional rather than intentional, leading to moderate inclusion without deeper exploration of diversity.
The film supports traditional Western values by highlighting the importance of the military and science in overcoming threats. It upholds patriotism and established systems without questioning capitalism or religion, maintaining a simple moral framework without deeper critique.
There are no characters with disabilities in the film, either visible or invisible, and none play a meaningful role. The story does not address perspectives on neurodivergence or chronic illness, and the focus on physical combat excludes any storyline involving disability.
