New Showbiz Analysis

Birthright stands out in the horror genre by integrating non-traditional domestic structures into a classic gothic framework. By centering a same-sex partnership, the film disrupts conventional expectations of lineage and the 'homecoming' cliché. The film avoids including someone from a minority group without giving them real depth by making the central relationship an integral part of character motivation and plot progression. It replaces standard genre clichés with a layered exploration of identity and ancestral connection. While the film successfully diversifies the protagonist's background and relationship, it remains centered on the tension between the two male leads, limiting the breadth of its gender representation.
