New Showbiz Analysis

Based on a True Story functions primarily as a psychological character study rather than a vehicle for broader social critique. It successfully centers female intellect and explores complex interpersonal relationships that go beyond traditional gender stereotypes. However, the film falls short in providing a wider range of racial and LGBTQ+ representation, which is essential for a higher score. Its focus on individual neuroses and the breakdown of social safety nets limits its cultural diversity.

The film highlights a strong bond between Delphine and Elle that questions traditional friendships. However, it doesn't have a clear storyline focused on LGBTQ+ issues or a direct critique of the assumption that everyone is straight.

How does Based on a True Story portray gender?

Fair

The story emphasizes the autonomy and intelligence of Delphine, a woman who acts independently. A male figure who poses a threat underscores the tension between personal empowerment and broader societal pressures.

How racially and ethnically diverse is Based on a True Story?

Limited

The cast is mainly made up of actors from similar backgrounds, reflecting a specific socioeconomic group in Los Angeles. There is a noticeable absence of diverse casting that would challenge the dominance of white culture.

There are no prominent characters with visible or invisible disabilities that play a central role in the plot.

Present on Screen

  • Highlights female independence and intellectual depth through its main characters.

  • Should include a more varied cast that reflects different backgrounds.

Official Synopsis
