Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

5.9/10

Fair

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Limited

The film lacks explicit LGBTQ+ character arcs or non-heteronormative relationship dynamics. The narrative focuses on a survivalist framework centered on a male protagonist.

Gender Representation

Fair

The story follows traditional survivalist tropes by centering on Luís, a male fisherman, as the primary agent of action. This suggests a conventional approach to gendered agency.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Good

The setting in a Brazilian mangrove swamp disrupts Anglo-centric horror norms. By focusing on local inhabitants, the film highlights a specific regional identity and ethnic diversity.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Good

The premise uses a polluted ecosystem to critique environmental degradation. This framing allows the narrative to explore systemic issues and the impact of external forces on local communities.

Disability Representation

Minimal

There is no specific information regarding characters with physical or neurodivergent disabilities. Consequently, no representation can be confirmed within the current context.

Strengths

  • Strong regional identity through its Brazilian mangrove setting.
  • Effective use of localized, non-Western environments to disrupt genre norms.
  • Implicit critique of environmental degradation and systemic neglect.

Areas for Improvement

  • Reliance on conventional gendered archetypes and male-centric agency.
  • Lack of visible LGBTQ+ representation or non-heteronormative dynamics.
  • Limited evidence of diverse character roles beyond the primary protagonist.

AI Analysis

Mud Zombies succeeds in breaking away from Hollywood's homogeneous settings by rooting its horror in the specific, regional identity of the Brazilian mangroves. This environmental focus provides a culturally rich backdrop that moves beyond standard Western tropes. However, the film relies on traditional character archetypes. The narrative agency is heavily concentrated in a singular male protector, which limits the breadth of gendered perspectives and leaves little room for diverse social dynamics.
