Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Fair

The film lacks visible engagement with queer identities. The narrative focuses on a traditional athletic journey, which appears to default to heteronormative structures.

Gender Representation

Fair

Agency is concentrated in the male protagonist, Calichín Delgado. The male-dominated sporting environment suggests a traditional hierarchy without evidence of subverting masculinity.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Good

The setting in the deep roots of Perú provides a space for indigenous or localized ethnic identities. This disrupts the typical focus on cosmopolitan, Westernized urban centers.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Fair

The story explores localized social structures through its second-division setting. It uses a descent from high-status success to examine community-based values and lifestyle consequences.

Disability Representation

Minimal

There is no mention of characters navigating physical, neurodivergent, or mental health conditions. No assessment can be made regarding the portrayal of disability.

Strengths

  • Strong commitment to regional authenticity by utilizing the deep roots of Perú.
  • Disrupts urban-centric storytelling by focusing on a second-division team.
  • Provides a platform for localized, non-Western social structures and values.

Areas for Improvement

  • The narrative architecture follows traditional, male-centric athletic redemption tropes.
  • Lacks visible engagement with LGBTQ+ identities or non-heteronormative narratives.
  • Does not provide evidence of disability representation or neurodivergent agency.

AI Analysis

Calichín is a regional character study that finds its strength in geographical specificity. By moving the setting away from urban centers to the deep roots of Perú, the film successfully challenges Westernized storytelling norms and allows for authentic ethnic representation. However, the film relies on traditional narrative tropes. The focus remains heavily on a male-centric athletic redemption arc, which limits the depth of its intersectional impact. The lack of visible LGBTQ+ or disability representation keeps the diversity profile moderate. Ultimately, the film excels at cultural localization but struggles to break away from conventional gender and social hierarchies.
