Wayne Wang employs his expertise in multicultural storytelling to craft a nuanced character study. The film excels by breaking down traditional archetypes, especially those related to gendered power dynamics and masculine stability. By featuring a diverse ensemble, the work avoids the homogeneity typical of mainstream productions. However, the film's exploration of disability is limited to the psychological state of the male protagonist. While it avoids exploitative clichés, it does not delve deeply into neurodivergence or chronic illness. The cultural themes focus on individual alienation rather than broader institutional critiques. Overall, the film offers a sophisticated examination of overlapping urban identities. It challenges conventional narratives by avoiding simplistic moral resolutions, opting instead for a realistic portrayal of connections within a complex social landscape.
