The Drama

No LGBTQ+ characters appear in the central couple or their friend group. The narrative and supporting roles remain exclusively heterosexual, leaving queer perspectives entirely absent from the story.

Zendaya’s Emma anchors the plot with a dark secret that commands the narrative. While the film balances male and female leads, the male lead’s escalating paranoia overshadows her agency in the second half.

The ensemble is multiracial, with Zendaya, Mamoudou Athie, and Alana Haim sharing prominent roles. Their racial differences are treated as ordinary within the group, avoiding tokenism or hierarchy.

The film interrogates moral absolutes through confessions of past violence, including Emma’s planned school shooting. It frames her actions as shaped by bullying and online culture, later softened by activism.

Emma’s single-ear deafness is introduced as a charming quirk during her first meeting with Charlie. It later resurfaces as a self-inflicted twist, functioning more as shock value than authentic representation.
