Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

3.7/10

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Limited

The film lacks LGBTQ+ characters or non-cisnormative identities. The plot focuses on familial inheritance and a group of friends without exploring queer identity or intimacy.

Gender Representation

Fair

A mixed-gender ensemble is present, featuring actresses like Eliza Dushku. However, the story follows standard thriller tropes rather than subverting traditional gender hierarchies.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Fair

The cast includes racial variety, such as Brandon T. Jackson. Despite this, race is not a central thematic driver within the Michigan-based setting.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

The narrative operates within a traditional Western thriller paradigm. It focuses on individualistic pursuits of wealth and family history rather than cultural critique.

Disability Representation

Limited

The asylum setting engages with themes of mental health and institutionalization. These elements function primarily as horror tropes rather than nuanced depictions of neurodivergence.

Strengths

  • The cast features a degree of racial variety through actors like Brandon T. Jackson.
  • The film includes a mixed-gender ensemble with women in key roles.

Areas for Improvement

  • The film lacks any discernible representation of LGBTQ+ identities or queer narratives.
  • Mental health themes are used as horror tropes rather than providing agency to characters with disabilities.
  • The narrative does not engage with cultural critique or intersectional themes.

AI Analysis

Eloise is a conventional horror-thriller that prioritizes atmospheric tension and mystery over social commentary. While the cast includes a mix of genders and races, the narrative does not use these elements to challenge systemic norms or explore intersectional identities. The film relies heavily on established genre tropes, such as the haunted asylum and the quest for inheritance. These elements serve the suspenseful plot but do not provide a platform for meaningful representation of disability or marginalized cultures. Ultimately, the movie functions as a standard genre piece. It maintains a level of surface-level diversity in its ensemble but lacks the narrative depth to disrupt traditional social hierarchies.
