Synopsis

Fourteen-year old Juliette lives in the country with her father and her older brother. When Juliette was younger, her mother left the family to pursue her career in New York; from that moment, Juliette started to gain weight. Today, she’s not obese, but she’s clearly the heaviest girl at her high school. But that doesn’t stop her from being vivacious, funny and unrepentantly rebellious. Juliette has big dreams: she wants to throw the best parties, move to New York to live with her mother, and date the most gorgeous guy in her school, an older boy who is about to graduate. In short, she wants everything she can’t have—which sometimes makes her forget to appreciate those who really love her. We follow this brazen and endearing girl during her hectic last few weeks before summer vacation, and watch as she does some growing up—but not too much.

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

4.6/10

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Limited

The film adheres to heteronormative structures typical of its mid-century setting. Juliette’s romantic interests are focused on a male peer, with no significant presence of non-cisnormative identities.

Gender Representation

Good

Juliette disrupts traditional hierarchies through her rebellious nature and refusal to conform to aesthetic expectations. She acts as a driver of her own narrative rather than a passive figure.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Limited

The cast remains homogeneous, reflecting the specific historical and geographical constraints of a Francophone Quebecois period piece. There is no evidence of color-blind casting or diverse ethnic perspectives.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Fair

The story explores the tension between individual desire and familial duty. It functions as a coming-of-age study centered on personal truth rather than explicit ideological frameworks.

Disability Representation

Fair

The film addresses body image by centering a protagonist who is the heaviest girl in her school. It avoids tragic tropes, treating her physicality as a standard part of her identity.

Strengths

  • Subverts traditional gender hierarchies by centering a rebellious, high-agency female protagonist.
  • Provides a nuanced portrayal of body image without relying on tragic or pity-based tropes.
  • Offers a strong, character-driven coming-of-age narrative focused on individual agency.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks representation of LGBTQ+ identities or narratives that critique heteronormativity.
  • Maintains a homogeneous cast that lacks racial and ethnic diversity.
  • Adheres strictly to the demographic constraints of its historical period.

AI Analysis

Jeune Juliette succeeds as a character study that subverts traditional feminine archetypes. By centering a vivacious, rebellious girl who refuses to conform to mid-century beauty standards, the film provides a refreshing take on female agency and body image. However, the film is limited by its historical setting, resulting in a lack of racial and LGBTQ+ diversity. The narrative remains firmly within a homogeneous, heteronormative framework typical of its era. Ultimately, the film's strength lies in its nuanced portrayal of a female protagonist's internal life, even if it lacks broad systemic intersectionality.
