I Smile Back is a psychological drama that delves into the internal struggles of a mother and her teenage daughter, challenging the myth of the perfect suburban life. However, the film's scope is limited by its narrow focus on a white, middle-class demographic, offering little representation for diverse racial or LGBTQ+ communities. Ultimately, the film excels in its detailed exploration of gendered expectations and mental health issues.

The film's setting and cast are predominantly white and middle-class, with little diversity in racial or ethnic backgrounds.
The film examines the breakdown of traditional family structures, particularly the vulnerability of mothers within these contexts, rather than upholding them as sanctuaries.
The film presents a raw and complex exploration of depression and self-harm, avoiding the simplistic portrayal of mental health issues as mere plot devices.

Official Synopsis
Laney is an attractive, intelligent suburban wife and devoted mother of two adorable children. She has the perfect husband who plays basketball with the kids in the driveway, a pristine house, and a shiny SUV for carting the children to their next activity. However, just beneath the façade lie depression and disillusionment that send her careening into a secret world of reckless compulsion. Only very real danger will force her to face the painful root of her destructiveness and its crumbling effect on those she loves.
