Maricela is a socially conscious drama that centers on the intersection of race, class, and gender. By focusing on a Salvadoran immigrant family, the film challenges conventional domestic narratives and examines the systemic barriers faced by people of color. The film's strength lies in its refusal to offer a simple assimilation story. Instead, it explores the tension between immigrant values and the affluent American lifestyle, providing a sophisticated look at socioeconomic displacement. However, the film's scope is limited regarding other forms of identity.
