Synopsis

La Cañada Real, on the outskirts of Madrid, is one of the largest illegal shanty towns in Europe. Tonino, a 15-year-old Roma boy, has always lived here with his family. With his best friend Bilal, they film the world around them using a mobile phone, inspired by the gypsy legends he hears at home. But everything falls apart when a notice of imminent eviction arrives at his home and he discovers that his best friend is leaving La Cañada for good. Tonino finds himself torn between the dream of a new life and his attachment to his family and roots.

LGBTQ+ Representation

Good

The film explores nuanced interpersonal dynamics through the relationship between Toni and Chule. This bond serves as a provocative insight into ideological schisms and identity politics within their community.

Gender Representation

Fair

The narrative focuses heavily on the adolescent male experience and familial pressures. Female characters appear as part of the foundational family unit rather than primary drivers of the plot.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Excellent

The film excels by centering the Roma experience through a protagonist of that heritage. This approach provides significant agency and cultural depth to non-white characters.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Excellent

The story critiques Western institutional power by framing eviction as a disruptive force. It prioritizes communal resilience and local legends over state-sanctioned legal structures.

Areas for Improvement

  • The plot focus remains heavily centered on the adolescent male experience.
  • Female characters lack significant agency, appearing primarily as part of the family background.

AI Analysis

Sleepless City is a powerful piece of intersectional cinema that centers the Roma experience. By filming on-location in the Cañada Real shanty town, the production avoids sanitized tropes in favor of an immersive, authentic look at marginalized life. The film succeeds by using specific cultural elements, such as Roma legends, to provide depth to its characters. It moves beyond simple archetypes to explore complex social tensions and systemic critiques of state power. While the film offers a sophisticated look at ethnic and cultural identity, the narrative agency remains largely concentrated among male protagonists, leaving less room for female-driven plot development.
