Synopsis

A story that imagines how these real-world phenomena may be related. In this story, startling amateur video and photographic evidence, as well as additional audio recordings, suggests whales weren’t the only creatures affected by the Navy’s sonar. The film follows the two scientists who tracked the whale beachings for years and delivers first-hand, on-camera accounts of what they claim to have discovered in the aftermath of one particular beaching. Their story is nothing less than fantastical: they claim to have found the remains of a mermaid.

AI Analysis

Mermaids: The Body Found operates as a speculative mockumentary centered on marine biology and scientific inquiry. The narrative architecture is built around the investigation of mythical creatures and environmental phenomena rather than social or intersectional identity politics. Because the film prioritizes the 'found footage' genre and the exploration of speculative biology, it lacks the intentionality required for progressive representation. The focus remains on the mystery of the mermaid discovery rather than disrupting conventional social hierarchies. Ultimately, the film maintains a traditional, homogeneous approach to its scientific characters, resulting in a lack of diversity across most identity-based categories.
