Unstable operates as a conventional domestic thriller that reinforces traditional social hierarchies. The narrative structure relies heavily on established genre clichés rather than attempting to challenge them through diverse perspectives. The story centers on a heterosexual family unit and a standard romantic framework. This focus limits the scope of representation, as the plot prioritizes domestic stability and traditional gendered tensions. Ultimately, the film lacks intentionality regarding the way different parts of someone's identity overlap. It follows predictable patterns of casting and character dynamics common to mid-budget thrillers of its era.
