New Showbiz Analysis

Singular uses a high-concept science fiction framework to deconstruct social hierarchies. By focusing on a protagonist without standard superhuman capabilities, the film creates a narrative proxy for underrepresented experiences and the struggle against systemic privilege. The film successfully challenges traditional gender roles through its antagonist, Sofia, and employs a powerful metaphor for disability through Andy's journey. However, the lack of explicit demographic details regarding race and LGBTQ+ identity limits the depth of its social commentary.

Category Breakdown

Does Singular have LGBTQ+ representation?

Fair

The film does not include visible LGBTQ+ themes or non-cisgender identities. There is no depiction of same-sex relationships or a critique of straight-centered assumptions.

How does Singular portray gender?

Fair

Sofia serves as a dominant antagonist, challenging traditional stereotypes of female submissiveness. She disrupts power dynamics by being the primary driver of social aggression.

How racially and ethnically diverse is Singular?

Fair

The speculative American setting provides potential for diverse casting, but specific ethnic identities are not defined. It is unclear if the film intentionally includes characters who reflect more than one aspect of diversity.

How does Singular represent religion and culture?

Good

The story critiques social stratification by contrasting 'normal' individuals with a superhuman hegemony. It examines how systemic structures of power define what it means to be special.

Does Singular include disability representation?

Good

Andy’s lack of superpowers symbolizes navigating a world not designed for his specific abilities. The narrative emphasizes his resilience and leadership rather than victimization.

Present on Screen

  • Challenges traditional gender roles by positioning a female character as a dominant, aggressive force of social control.
  • Employs the superhuman/normal dichotomy as a powerful metaphor for disability and navigating non-standard abilities.
  • Critiques systemic power structures and social stratification through its speculative narrative framework.

Limited or Absent

  • Lacks explicit representation of LGBTQ+ identities or queer themes within the narrative.
  • Does not provide specific details regarding the racial or ethnic identities of the central characters.
  • Risk of falling into 'inspiration porn' clichés depending on how Andy's disability metaphor is executed.

Official Synopsis

In an America where everyone has superpowers, Andy, the only kid who doesn't have one, struggles to escape a group of bullies led by Sofia, who just wants to make Andy's life more miserable than it already is. But what begins as an ordinary 'everyday' beating ends up spiraling out of control, putting our hero in a life-or-death situation where courage, leadership and sacrifice will guide Andy -- and Sofia -- to discover the true meaning of "being special."
