The film is a traditional fantasy adaptation that closely follows established fairy tale archetypes. While it features a female lead with significant influence, the narrative structure remains rooted in conventional clichés. Representation is largely absent across most diversity categories. The story lacks visible markers of racial, ethnic, or LGBTQ+ diversity, favoring a standard Western folkloric framework. Ultimately, the film prioritizes a classic moral arc over multifaceted or progressive character studies. It operates as a straightforward hero's journey without disrupting social hierarchies.
Category Breakdown
The film focuses on the friendship between Gerda and Kay but does not include any non-cisgender identities or stories that challenge the idea that everyone is straight.
Gerda is a proactive female character who drives the plot. However, the story relies on the cliché of a male companion who becomes passive due to a supernatural force.
The narrative lacks information about ethnic composition. The setting suggests a traditional European folkloric aesthetic, which often features a homogeneous Western cast.
The story follows a traditional Western folkloric structure emphasizing a classic moral struggle between innocence and isolation, rather than challenging cultural norms.
Kay’s transformation into a cold-hearted figure serves as a magical plot device. This does not provide a nuanced or meaningful portrayal of disability or neurodivergence.
