The Rattle Rat operates within the conventions of late-1980s crime thrillers. The narrative structure emphasizes professional hierarchies and traditional social structures, limiting the exploration of diverse identities. While the film introduces ethnic tension through a localized conflict, it lacks a diverse, integrated cast. The focus remains on a male-dominated investigative duo, reinforcing the gender hierarchies of the time. Ultimately, the film functions as a standard procedural without engaging significantly with non-assuming gender matches what was assigned at birth identities or challenging conventional cultural norms.
Category Breakdown
The film does not include any explicit LGBTQ+ characters or narratives. The story focuses on a traditional crime investigation without addressing queer identity.
The story centers around a male-dominated police duo dealing with male-centric conflicts. There is a notable absence of female involvement in the main investigative roles.
The film mentions a 'Chinese war' in Leeuwarden, indicating the presence of ethnic minorities. However, it is unclear if these characters have a significant role or are just part of the background.
The narrative follows standard procedural logic, reinforcing social and legal orders. It does not offer a clear critique of Western institutions or secular ideologies.
The mention of an 'asthmatic rat' seems to be a narrative device rather than a depiction of human disability. There is no evidence of human neurodivergence.

Official Synopsis
A rich Frisian farmer has been murdered in Amsterdam and police duo Grijpstra & De Gier are sent to investigate. Adjutant Grijpstra has problems at home again and is happy to leave for Friesland to investigate the murder. Sgt. De Gier finds the Frisian Hylke much more interesting than the murder case. In Leeuwarden there is a real Chinese war and a brutal robbery at the cattle market. Suddenly there is that friendly rattling, asthmatic rat who provides an unexpected solution.
