Tongan Ninja introduces Pacific Islander and East Asian identities, offering a fresh perspective in the action genre. The film highlights ethnic diversity through its setting and main character. However, the film falls short in other areas. Female characters are often portrayed in objectified roles, and there is no indication of LGBTQ+ inclusion or detailed social commentary. Overall, the film leans heavily on traditional genre clichés. While it successfully diversifies its ethnic cast, it lacks the depth and complexity required for a higher diversity score.
Category Breakdown
The film does not include explicit LGBTQ+ characters or stories that challenge the idea that everyone is straight. It focuses on traditional martial arts and villain roles that follow common social norms.
Women are primarily shown in the 'super-sexy' Action Fighter role, which suggests they are objectified rather than given independent roles or opportunities to challenge gender norms.
The story centers around a Tongan protagonist and a Chinese-owned business in New Zealand. This mix of Pacific Islander and East Asian identities breaks away from typical Anglo-centric action movie themes.
The film explores cultural mixing through Tongan, Chinese, and New Zealander influences. However, the plot follows a standard genre conflict without deeper institutional or cultural criticism.
There is no information about how physical, neurodivergent, or sensory disabilities are portrayed in this production.
