No Boundaries succeeds in centering the immigrant experience, moving away from Anglo-centric drama to highlight the precariousness of life under state authority. By placing Isabel Moreno at the heart of the conflict, the film grants a underrepresented protagonist a significant role in driving the story in navigating systemic obstacles. However, the film relies on a conventional romantic framework that limits its exploration of identity. The lack of LGBTQ+ representation and the absence of characters with disabilities result in a narrower scope of storytelling that reflects multiple aspects of identity. Ultimately, the film's strength lies in its cultural critique and its refusal to treat the immigrant journey as a secondary subplot.
Category Breakdown
