Mohsen Makhmalbaf’s work provides a vital disruption to Western storytelling norms by centering an authentic Iranian narrative. The film’s strength lies in its cultural authenticity and its sophisticated, postmodernist exploration of truth and identity through a non-Western lens. However, the film remains tethered to traditional social hierarchies. The narrative prioritizes male ambitions and domestic struggles, offering little room for female independence or diverse gender identities. Ultimately, while the film excels in ethnic and cultural representation, it lacks engagement with broader identity politics regarding LGBTQ+ or disability representation.
Category Breakdown
The film focuses on the male protagonist's existential and professional struggles without including any non-straight or transgender identities. The story stays within a traditional social framework.
The narrative centers on the male experience and patriarchal structures. The protagonist's wife is present but her role revolves around domestic issues such as infertility, rather than having independent ability to act.
The film provides an authentic Iranian perspective and avoids a Western-centric viewpoint, offering a genuine look at Iranian culture which is often sidelined in global media.
The film uses a meta-cinematic approach to question absolute truths and explore identity through artifice. It also offers a thoughtful critique of socioeconomic hardships and systemic financial pressures.
The story touches on infertility but frames it as a familial issue. There is no evidence of characters with disabilities being used as central narrative drivers.
