I Am the River, the River Is Me stands out as a powerful example of indigenous-centered storytelling. By focusing on Māori leadership and the unique legal status of the Whanganui River, the film successfully shifts the perspective from colonial exploitation to indigenous stewardship. The documentary excels at challenging Western legal and environmental paradigms. It replaces anthropocentric views of nature with a worldview rooted in ecological interconnectedness and spiritual kinship. While the film offers strong representation of Māori identity and culture, it remains neutral on LGBTQ+ and disability issues.
