Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

2.2/10

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film follows a strictly heteronormative framework. There is no presence of non-cisnormative identities or same-sex intimacy within the character arcs.

Gender Representation

Limited

Narrative agency is concentrated within a male-dominated police unit. Female characters are largely absent or relegated to the periphery of the tactical conflict.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Fair

Casting reflects the local demographic of the Malaysian police force and Kota Kinabalu. It functions as a localized piece rather than a vehicle for racial deconstruction.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

The story reinforces traditional institutional authority and the legitimacy of the state. It promotes social stability and conventional views on patriotism and civic duty.

Disability Representation

Minimal

There is no focus on neurodivergence or physical disability. Characters are defined primarily by their physical capability and tactical utility in the field.

Strengths

  • Provides authentic regional representation by reflecting the specific demographic reality of the Malaysian police force and Kota Kinabalu setting.

Areas for Improvement

  • The film lacks gender diversity, concentrating almost all narrative agency within a male-dominated unit.
  • There is a complete absence of representation for LGBTQ+ identities or characters with disabilities.
  • The narrative reinforces traditional social hierarchies and institutional authority without engaging in cultural critique.

AI Analysis

Polis Evo is a conventional action thriller that prioritizes tactical combat and law enforcement duty. The narrative structure reinforces existing social hierarchies and traditional masculine archetypes rather than challenging them. While the film provides authentic regional representation through its local setting and casting, it lacks intersectional complexity. The focus remains on institutional stability and the necessity of state authority to combat crime. Ultimately, the film operates within a traditional framework, offering little subversion of gendered power dynamics or social norms.
