Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Limited

The film lacks explicit depictions of LGBTQ+ characters or same-sex intimacy. The ensemble consists of a conventional group of college students without visible queer subtext.

Gender Representation

Fair

Miriam serves as the central female protagonist. However, the characters largely follow traditional horror tropes where women are positioned as targets of an external threat.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Limited

The cast appears homogeneous, focusing on a group of students from New York City. There is no evidence of non-white majority casting or racial diversity.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Fair

The story follows a standard Western social framework centered on a birthday celebration. It lacks complex critiques of religion, capitalism, or specific cultural institutions.

Disability Representation

Minimal

No characters are identified as having physical disabilities, neurodivergent traits, or chronic illnesses. There is no visible representation of disability in the narrative.

Strengths

  • The film centers on a female protagonist, Miriam, providing a female-led perspective within the horror framework.

Areas for Improvement

  • The ensemble lacks racial and ethnic diversity, adhering to a very homogeneous casting pattern.
  • There is a notable absence of LGBTQ+ representation or non-cisnormative identities within the primary cast.
  • The narrative relies on traditional gender tropes rather than subverting established horror hierarchies.
  • The story lacks representation of disability, both visible and invisible, among the central characters.

AI Analysis

Evil Things follows a traditional found-footage horror structure that relies heavily on established genre tropes. The narrative focuses on a group of college students facing an external predator, which limits the opportunity for deep character exploration. The film lacks intersectional complexity, presenting a largely homogeneous ensemble. It does not actively work to subvert social hierarchies or introduce diverse identity politics into the Catskills setting. Ultimately, the film functions as a standard survival thriller. It prioritizes tension and the mechanics of the found-footage format over meaningful representation or cultural critique.
