Girls on the Run succeeds in centering women's ability to drive the story and challenging institutional authority. By focusing on three young women escaping a psychiatric facility, the film disrupts traditional hierarchies and prioritizes character autonomy over systemic control. However, the film lacks specific markers for LGBTQ+ representation and provides only moderate racial diversity. While the cast is multi-ethnic, the depth of these cultural identities is not fully explored. Ultimately, the film is a strong character study of underrepresented perspectives, particularly regarding mental health and gendered rebellion, even if it lacks broader multi-layered breadth.
