Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

6.0/10

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Fair

The inclusion of mermaids introduces mythological figures that disrupt traditional biological and gendered norms. While no explicit queer narratives are present, these fantastical entities provide a framework for non-cisnormative identity exploration.

Gender Representation

Good

Protagonists Tyrone and Pablo occupy high-agency roles as deep-sea explorers and technical operators. This disrupts traditional gendered expectations regarding exploration and technical mastery within the narrative.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Good

The use of anthropomorphic animal characters allows for a form of race-bent casting. This approach bypasses traditional human racial hierarchies and avoids ethnic stereotyping through a universalist ensemble.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Fair

The story focuses on the protection of the mermaid garden, highlighting themes of environmental stewardship. This emphasizes respect for distinct cultural boundaries and the preservation of isolated social structures.

Disability Representation

Minimal

The narrative provides no explicit evidence regarding the depiction of physical or neurodivergent disabilities. As such, no representation is visible in the current character data.

Strengths

  • Anthropomorphic characters allow for a diverse ensemble that avoids human racial stereotyping.
  • Protagonists engage in high-agency roles that disrupt traditional gendered expectations of exploration.
  • The narrative promotes respect for distinct cultural boundaries through the protection of the mermaid garden.

Areas for Improvement

  • The absence of explicit queer narratives prevents a higher score for LGBTQ+ representation.
  • There is no visible representation of physical or neurodivergent disabilities.
  • The reliance on mythic figures lacks the depth of specific, character-driven identity exploration.

AI Analysis

The film utilizes anthropomorphism and fantasy to navigate complex social themes. By using non-human characters, the production avoids traditional racial and gendered hierarchies, creating a space for inclusive storytelling that feels universal rather than tied to specific human markers. Agency is a central theme, particularly through the technical roles of the protagonists and the collective defense of the mermaids. This distribution of power challenges conventional patriarchal or expansionist narratives. While the fantasy elements offer a foundation for identity exploration, the lack of explicit character-driven queer or disability-focused narratives limits the depth of its representation.
