Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

5.0/10

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Limited

The story centers on a traditional nuclear family consisting of a widower and his two daughters. There is no evidence of queer narratives or non-cisnormative identities within this framework.

Gender Representation

Fair

Female characters drive the tension as victims of supernatural terrors, yet they lack agency. The father remains the primary protector and problem-solver within a traditional patriarchal structure.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Excellent

The film offers a refreshing departure from Western tropes by centering on a Vietnamese family. It utilizes indigenous folklore to provide a rich, non-Western perspective on heritage.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Fair

The narrative explores the weight of ancestral legacy and historical family secrets. It remains unclear if the film critiques traditional spiritualism or promotes a more secular viewpoint.

Disability Representation

Fair

Sleep paralysis and night terrors serve as central plot devices for horror. These elements function more as atmospheric catalysts than nuanced explorations of neurodivergent lived experiences.

Strengths

  • Provides a significant non-Western perspective by centering Vietnamese culture and indigenous folklore.
  • Disrupts Western-centric horror tropes through its specific cultural setting and ancestral themes.

Areas for Improvement

  • Female characters function primarily as victims rather than agents of their own salvation.
  • Mental health conditions like sleep paralysis are used as horror devices rather than nuanced character studies.
  • The narrative adheres to traditional, heteronormative family structures without subverting them.

AI Analysis

The Ancestral succeeds as a culturally specific horror piece that disrupts the Hollywood-standard landscape. By centering a Vietnamese family and utilizing local folklore, it provides high agency to non-Western characters and offers a necessary alternative to Anglo-Saxon horror traditions. However, the film remains tethered to conventional social hierarchies. The gender dynamics follow a traditional patriarchal model, and the representation of mental health struggles feels more like a tool for dread than a character-driven study. Ultimately, the film's strength lies in its ethnic authenticity rather than the active subversion of identity-based or social structures.
