Where to Watch

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

4.2/10

Fair

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The narrative relies exclusively on heterosexual relationships, centering on the marriage between Ethan and Xanthe. No queer identities or themes appear, adhering strictly to traditional heteronormative storytelling conventions without subversion.

Gender Representation

Fair

Male agency drives the plot, with Ethan as the central hero. Female characters like Regina Jackson serve supportive or administrative roles rather than disrupting traditional hierarchies, maintaining a standard sci-fi structure where women lack primary leadership agency.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Good

Casting reflects Australia’s multicultural reality with Indigenous actors Aaron Glenane and Deborah Mailman. However, these characters remain peripheral to the white protagonist’s journey, lacking the narrative agency or intersectional depth to fully challenge historical cinematic norms.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

The film critiques corporate greed but avoids deep systemic cultural critique. It maintains a conventional moral framework focused on individual heroism, failing to challenge Western institutions or explore progressive values beyond standard dystopian thriller tropes.

Disability Representation

Limited

Xanthe’s illness serves as a passive plot device to motivate the male lead rather than exploring disability with agency. The narrative avoids the social model of disability, presenting the condition as a burden that drives the protagonist’s arc rather than a lived experience.

Strengths

  • Casting reflects Australia’s multicultural reality, including prominent Indigenous actors.
  • Avoids overtly harmful stereotypes or whitewashing in its character portrayals.
  • Features female characters with professional significance, though limited in agency.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks any LGBTQ+ representation or queer narrative threads entirely.
  • Female characters remain peripheral, lacking primary leadership or disruptive agency.
  • Disability is used as a passive plot device rather than explored with nuance.

AI Analysis

The film’s diversity profile is defined by a stark contrast between its inclusive casting and its conservative narrative structure. While the presence of Indigenous and multicultural actors in key roles signals a progressive intent in production, the story itself remains anchored in traditional white, male-centric heroism. This disconnect prevents the demographic diversity from translating into meaningful narrative representation. Gender dynamics further limit the score, as female characters are relegated to supportive or administrative functions. The absence of LGBTQ+ representation is total, with the plot relying entirely on a heterosexual marital bond. Disability is treated as a motivational tool for the protagonist rather than a subject of exploration, reducing complex human experiences to plot mechanics. Ultimately, the film operates within a conventional dystopian framework that prioritizes individual scientific agency over collective or systemic change. The lack of intersectional depth and the failure to subvert traditional power hierarchies result in a moderate overall score, reflecting a work that is visually ambitious but narratively unchallenging in its approach to diversity.
